Just FYI, I have not been able to select output categories in the "Portfolio Items" widget for a while, nothing comes up. You can select categories to output with the VC-built widget (Post Grid), but not the one that comes with Kalium. See video below.

You should use Taxonomies instead of Categories, and everything will work as it should
