I'd like to ask if it's doable to have a space on the top of the Category Listing Page for an Image Banner, somewhat like an image banner placeholder for promos or ads.

You can't use Visual Composer on category pages (on this category page for example http://azeyah.com/product-category/women-apparel).
If you want to do something with Visual Composer you must create a new page and then add categories from the Product VC element > Taxonomies http://drops.laborator.co/15xGa
