I'm unsure if you are talking about the Shop page or Product page. Still, I will send you this article that will help you to understand how to add categories: Managing Product Categories, Tags and Attributes.
If you are asking how to add categories to the Shop page, you can do it by clicking this option (see video).
Then you can add an image to each of the shop categories
As for the rounded categories, we have added some CSS codes to make those categories more special for the Bookstore demo only, if you need those CSS codes I can give them to you.
