The only way I was able to accomplish this was take the featured image out. If I include a featured image, it will default to the hero/banner image. I still would like an image for my thumbnail (as it creates and empty placeholder instead).
Can an alternate image be added through a custom field or is there another way?
You can control what you want to show/hide in the single blog post, so you can add the featured image which will show in the blog archive but not when you view the post. To do this please follow the instructions in the image:
