URL portfolio slug breaks published page

Whenenver I add a new portfolio page, the URL automatically populates as /portfolio/page-name even though I have the URL rewrite options turned off in Theme Options > Portfolio Settings. I am unable to remove or change the /portfolio/ part of the URL.

When I preview the page in draft mode everything looks fine. However, once I publish the page, the URL slug deletes the /portfolio/ section of the URL and this causes the page to break and not show any of my content (see attachment)

I've tried multiple things including turning URL Rewrite Options on, then going to Settings > Permalink and selecting "Save Changes" but this makes all my previous portfolio pages display a 404 error.

I am completely unable to create new portfolio pages because of this URL issue.

    Please help!

EDIT: I seemed to have solved this by changing my URL slug -- however, I still don't understand why this fixed it!
