Ups sorry for that typo, I wrote Kalium instead of Aurum, yes Aurum does that too, but you can install WP Super Cache and Autoptimize plugin to make your site much faster. If those plugins doesn't speed up your site then you should contact your hosting provider and ask them to upgrade your PHP and MySQL version of needed and optimise your site.

How shall we optimize the images to avoid serving larger images and scaling them using css/html?

Images that you use in the theme are automatically compressed and also Kalium serves only the images that are needed for each screen resolution.
