Sorry but that is the only solution not just for our theme but for all Wordpress themes that support Multilingual sites. There is also a free plugin called Polylang but it is not better that WPML and we don't fully support this plugin.
You don't need to do that. Please read WPML documentation and if you have any question related to this plugin you can write WPML support for that.
As for your question to use two Kalium sites for both languages, I think that this is not a nice idea because you will need to make every change two times and this is time consuming and also not a good practice.
