    I would like to remove the icon overlay for links, when the mouse hovers over it

    Hi amosyeo,

    You have to try something tricky for this case. Please consider reading the article we wrote about Blog Settings, in this section Thumbnail hover layer icon, use custom icon setting and upload transparent PNG , so there will be icon but just transparent.
