Ideally, I'd like to do the same for custom posts, like the portfolio pages, as well as the blog posts. Is this possible? I'm mildly familiar with php and wordpress's version of it, if that helps.
1) Is good that you don't have to edit any file in theme, all you need to do is on Visual Composer to activate Editor for Post, see the article to learn how to activate.
2) Than use Rev Component of VC, just like image blow
Regarding to your request you should do it over editing the code, unfortunately we don't provide customers with custom code, but at least we tell'em which file you have to edit.
File: themes/kalium/tpls/post-single.php
Here you can past the code of RevSlider
If you're looking for professional help in this matter, there's always someone available for such tasks on the WP Kraken or Envato Studio. Pricing and timeline are always straightforward there and that's the main reason for recommending those services.
Hi -
I would like to apply a thin, full-width banner across the top of all blog posts. The banner won't be the Featured image, but a custom Revolution Slider banner, like on this page: http://www.crosswalkventures.com/crosswalkventures/team/tom-cirrito/

Hi Eroll,
Unfortunately, this doesn't behave the way I want it to behave:

What I want is the crosswalk banner should be ABOVE the content, not extending across it. Like here:
