I want my blog post images to be displayed in masonry format, where the images are pulled from a link, not through the media gallery. This is because we are using a third party tool to make the images shoppable (hovering on the image shows the product link).
Current Visual editor allows masonry in blog posts, but the images can only be used from the media library.

Yes this is supported, here is how to do that:
1. Create a blog post and assign a Image as Post Format:
(view large version)
2. Then in the first line of text add the url of the external image:
(view large version)
3. Remove any Featured image if it is assigned:
(view large version)
4. The result is:
(view large version)
